Karina Chavarria

She/Her/Hers Assistant Professor of Sociology, California State University Channel Islands

I am a Latina immigrant who was determined to attain a college education; not only to achieve personal freedom from poverty, but because a college education represented an avenue for working with marginalized communities in addressing disparities in access to equitable opportunities for living a better life. Over the 10+ years of working with working-class and minoritized high school and undergraduate students within and outside of the classroom, I have foregrounded the connections between community ways of knowing and academic knowledge to create programs that will address inequities in our society.
