Accommodations
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) § 36.203(a) states that “A public accommodation shall afford goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, and accommodations to an individual with a disability in the most integrated setting appropriate to the needs of the individual.”
In the registration form, you were asked questions about accessibility and other special needs, such as allergies. The SUCCESS Convening committee will follow up with any attendees who answered “yes” in these categories.
Additionally, we have the following accommodations, among others, in place. If you have questions or need to request a particular accommodation, please contact info@presidentsalliance.org.
- The event locations the SUCCESS Convening selects are ADA compliant.
- Staff, volunteers, and temporary workers are instructed to be on the lookout for attendees who may need assistance and escorts.
- There will be gender-neutral restrooms located throughout the event space. You can find the specific locations of gender-neutral bathrooms in each building.
- Attendees will have access to a nursing/lactation private space if needed.
We have partnered with the Marriott Houston Medical Center/Museum District to block off rooms for our attendees. There are limited rooms at a discounted rate so make sure to book your rooms by March 7 for a discounted rate.
Hobby Airport is the closest airport to the university (about a 30-minute drive in favorable traffic conditions). George Bush Intercontinental Airport, which is much larger, is generally just under an hour’s drive away, but the drive can take longer in peak traffic times. Shuttle bus service is available from Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport to most hotels in the Rice University area. For more information, contact Airport Express at 713-523-8888. Taxi service to the university costs about twice as much as the airport shuttle bus, and limousine service is typically twice the taxi rate. For more information click here.
One of our partners for the convening—Immigrants Rising—created this helpful guide for Undocumented Individuals Traveling within the US that you might find helpful to share with students, recent graduates and/or undocumented entrepreneurs who would like to attend.
General Convening Information
We believe Texas is an important state for our Convening due to (1) having the second-largest population of undocumented students in the country and (2) being the first state to adopt tuition equity policies in 2001. To read more about this click here.
This issue is a priority matter for the convening team. We will monitor the legislation closely as it progresses and provide summaries of the law, resources, and litigation updates to help participants make well-informed decisions. We will also provide information and guidance for individuals flying in without DACA. As soon as we have more details, we will share those with you, update participants on any resources, and add them to the SUCCESS landing page.
The convening will be held at the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University, 6100 Main St., Houston, TX 77005-1827. We will start our sessions at the Anderson-Clarke Center at Entrance 8.
Uber/Lyft can drop you off at the Anderson-Clarke Center’ loop drive. 6100 Main St., Houston, TX 77005-1827
We anticipate anywhere between 200-250 participants from 60+ public and private institutions and community organizations.
Yes, you will get more details of each session soon, including speaker biographies and workshop descriptions in the coming months.
Attire at the SUCCESS Convening is business casual. Wear comfortable shoes as we may also have some sessions or lunch outdoors. We recommend dressing in layers as air conditioning is difficult to regulate in large facilities. Rooms may be overly warm or cool.
The SUCCESS Convening schedule is as follows:
- Friday March 29, 2024 – will start at 9:00 am CT and end at 5:00 pm
- Saturday March 30, 2024- will start at 9:00 am CT and end at 5:00pm
The planning committee continues to monitor COVID-19 updates, CDC guidelines and recommendations and will follow all of Rice University’s COVID-19 protocols, which you can find here. We suggest that attendees are vaccinated, however, the Texas Governor’s Executive Order No. GA-39 of 2021 prohibits vaccine mandates and vaccine passports in Texas.
If you develop symptoms before you travel, please stay home. While we will miss you, the health and safety of our community and visitors is paramount. Please test before returning to campus and contact us if you test positive so that we can help you with logistics.
You can stay updated on undocumented student affairs through the host’s websites: Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, Immigrants Rising, and The Dream.US.
If you would like to make a financial contribution to support the SUCCESS convening and help sustain our work supporting undocumented students, you can do so here. We greatly appreciate your support and engagement.
We will be sending you an email with updates, a questionnaire, and the agenda.
