Lorenda Schrader

She/her/hers Senior Director, International Student & Scholar Programs and Initiatives, Office of International Services, Indiana University

Lorenda (Rendy) Schrader has worked in the field of international education for 42 years. At IU, she has worked for the Center for International Education and Development Assistance (placing mid-career African nationals in short-term internships), the Career Development Center (designing services for international students seeking employment), and the Office of International Services. In 2019, in collaboration with several colleagues, she formed a task force of campus experts to admit serve and fund refugee students. The goal was to admit 10 refugees per year, up to a total of 40, and then maintain the numbers at that level. After a COVID delay, the project is now back on track and IU is about to begin year 3 with 28 refugees for the academic year 2024-2025. The task force learned a lot since then, but the general principle of identifying existing campus experts, providing them with some intercultural training and trauma-informed counseling awareness has allowed the task force to be nimble and responsive to the wide variety of refugee needs.
